The job of sketchwriter is a peculiarly British invention. No one knows why that is, really, except for the undeniably fact that Britain like a bit of laughter with their politics.
Sketchwriters, rather grandly, like to trace our roots back to Samuel Johnson and Charles Dickens and today there are five national newspapers in Britain who employ a full-time sketchwriter. I have been writing the sketch for The Times for 12 years and have covered three elections.
I’ve included some abridged versions of a few sketches from all of them (2005, 2010 and 2015).
If you’d like to read more, you will need to find a copy of the paper or visit the website of The Times (www.thetimes.co.uk).
